The San Francisco 49ers are bolstering their pass catchers by adding a familiar face to their practice squad.

According to NFL insider Mike Garafolo, “The #49ers are re-signing WR Terique Owens, son of Hall of Famer Terrell Owens, to the practice squad, according to his agent @Agent_Big_Al. The undrafted free agent was with the team this offseason and waived in August due to a hand injury. Now healthy, he’s back in Santa Clara.”

The 49ers are set to bring back former undrafted free agent Terique Owens, who is the son of San Francisco legend Terrell Owens. Terique had been with the team in the offseason, but a hand injury led to him being waived.

Terique played for Missouri State in 2023, securing 528 yards and four touchdowns on 28 receptions.

The younger Owens spent the 2021 to 2023 seasons with Missouri State, bringing in a total of 765 yards and four touchdowns. His longest reception was 46 yards and 16.6 yards per catch average.

Terique went undrafted but was signed by the 49ers. He had an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster but suffered a hand fracture that sidelined him for five to seven weeks. The 49ers waived Terique with an injury designation.

Terique had been impressing in training camp and caught touchdown passes in 11-on-11 drills. He may have potentially made the roster had he kept being able to play.

The young receiver posted a 4.51 40-yard dash with the 49ers front office in attendance at his Pro Day with Missouri State. Terique initially played for Contra Costa College, then he transferred to Florida Atlantic in 2020, and finally to Missouri State.

The 49ers are a bit thin in terms of wide receiver depth. Ricky Persall is still out after being involved in a robbery incident and getting shot. Chris Conley is questionable with an oblique injury, and Jacob Cowing is also questionable after injuring his shoulder on Sunday.

The 49ers still have Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, but Samuel was also dealing with an injury of his own. Samuel returned against the Patriots and posted 58 yards.

Aiyuk has not been living up to expectations after signing a four-year, $129 million extension. So far, he has only tallied 167 yards in four games.

Terique is likely to remain on the practice squad, but he can be elevated to the active roster should the 49ers need more firepower at the wide receiver position. With the praise that the rookie receiver received in training camp, it wouldn’t be the least bit surprising if he was elevated sooner rather than later.
