Netflix is really bursting with options for the first weekend in October.
Last week’s thriller, Wayward, has now become the new No. 1 show on Netflix.
And since I haven’t seen it yet, it’s one of the three underrated Netflix shows I can’t wait to watch this weekend.
Watch With Us is also throwing the spotlight on a newly arrived video game adaptation and a true crime story you won’t forget anytime soon. You may want to watch that one with the lights on.
‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story’ (2025)
Before this season of Monster, you may not have heard of Ed Gein. However, you’ll almost certainly have heard of Norman Bates and Leatherface, two of the cinematic serial killers who were inspired by Gein’s gruesome crimes. The genesis of the Psycho and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre killers is actually explored in this show. Still, the story primarily focuses on Gein, as played by Sons of Anarchy‘s Charlie Hunnam.
In the 1950s, Gein was a man who suffered from severe mental illness and a very unhealthy relationship with his mother, Augusta Gein (Laurie Metcalf). That led Gein down a dark path of murder and grave robbery, but his origin as a killer goes back several years earlier. This may be the scariest show you’ll see in October, thanks to the very real monster at the heart of it.
Monster: The Ed Gein Story is streaming on Netflix.
‘Halo’ (2022 – 2024)
Even if you’re not a fan of the Halo video game franchise, action and sci-fi lovers should find a lot to enjoy in the Halo show. This formerly exclusive Paramount+ original series takes place in the 26th century as humanity’s interstellar expansion leads directly to a war with the fanatical aliens in the Covenant.
Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 (Pablo Schreiber) is one of the Spartan super soldiers who were created to face the Covenant. But when Master Chief is ordered to execute a teenage girl, Kwan Ha (Yerin Ha), he defies his orders and goes on the run with her. Master Chief is also haunted by visions of an enigmatic alien super weapon known as Halo, which may turn the tide of the galactic war if he can find it before the Covenant can.
Halo is streaming on Netflix.
‘Wayward’ (2025)
Tall Pines Academy is the place where troubled teenagers are sent in Netflix’s new thriller Wayward. But it’s not as if Abbie (Sydney Topliffe) had any choice in the matter. After Abbie’s parents dump her at Tall Pines, her best friend, Leila (Alyvia Alyn Lind), attempts to rescue her before she ends up imprisoned there as well.
The two girls quickly realize something sinister is happening at the school, and head teacher Evelyn Wade (Toni Collette) is hiding Tall Pines’ darkest secrets. Police officer Alex Dempsey (Mae Martin) may be the only adult that Leila and Abbie can count on for help, assuming they can stay alive long enough to determine what’s really going on at the school.
Wayward is streaming on Netflix.
