The San Francisco 49ers have been riddled by injuries throughout the first eight weeks of the 2025 NFL season. Brock Purdy has been one of the players who has missed a lot of time already this year.

With eight weeks already gone this season, Purdy has only been able to play in two games.

In Week 9 NFL action, the 49ers are gearing up to take on the New York Giants. Purdy’s status has been unknown all week long, but a final decision has been reached.

Cowboys’ Stephen Jones Sends Pointed Trade Deadline Message

Unfortunately, San Francisco will have to play another game without Purdy as its starter. In his place, Mac Jones will receive another opportunity to be the 49ers’ starting quarterback.

According to head coach Kyle Shanahan as shared by Matt Barrows of The Athletic, Purdy is questionable to play in Sunday’s game. However, he will not be the starter. That does leave the door open for him to at least be active and available if needed.

“QB Brock Purdy (toe) is questionable for Sunday. He won’t start — Mac Jones will — be he could be available against the Giants, Kyle Shanahan said,” Barrows shared.

So far this season in two games, Purdy has struggled. He has completed 65.8 percent of his pass attempts for 586 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions.

Jones has stepped in and played well for San Francisco. He has appeared in six games this year, throwing for 1,597 yards, eight touchdowns, and five interceptions, while completing 65.9 percent of his passes.

Despite not having their starting quarterback throughout much of the season, the 49ers have bene able to win football games. They hold a 5-3 record and are very much alive in the NFC playoff picture. Many teams would have folded under the injury adversity that San Francisco has already faced this season.

Draymond Green Doesn’t Hold Back on Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes

It will be interesting to see how the team fares throughout the remainder of the season. Purdy appears to be getting close to resuming his duties as the 49ers’ starting quarterback. That should help the team remain competitive in the playoff race.

More news is sure to become available about Purdy’s status in the near future. For now, there is a chance that he could be active behind Jones, but he will not get the start against the Giants.
