The Goo Goo Dolls frontman John Rzeznik is hitting pause on tour plans to focus on his health.

On Tuesday, December 3, the rock band announced they were postponing their concerts in South Africa after the 58-year-old lead vocalist was hospitalized with pneumonia.

“We’re heartbroken to postpone our South Africa shows,” the band wrote on Instagram, sharing a video of Rzeznik from his hospital bed. “This country means so much to us, and we were so excited to create more memories with you. Sadly, my doctor has advised rest and recovery.”

The “Iris” singer and his bandmates were geared up to hit the stage in Cape Town, Durban, and Pretoria this week but will now return next year. “Thank you for your understanding—we’ll make it worth the wait when we return in March 2025!” the caption concluded.

In the clip, Rzeznik apologized directly to his fans. “I’m truly sorry that I cannot be there, but I wound up going to the doctor and I have pneumonia, and they checked me into the hospital,” he explained. “I’m stuck here for a day or two. But we’re working on getting back down there as fast as we can. And I will keep you informed about that. I’m just really sorry that we couldn’t do this. I apologize that this happened.”

After the video was posted on social media, it didn’t take long for fans to react in the comments section.

“Dude you are one of the hardest working touring musicians of all time. You don’t have to apologize to anybody. Hope you get better soon sir, wishing you a speedy recovery,” one person wrote.

“All the best vibes to feeling better John! 🙌🏻🤙🏻 ” another added.

“Take care of yourself—we know how much it takes for you to cancel a show. We’ll be here when you’re ready and back to full health,” chimed in a third.

“Lots of love to you, Johnny. Hope you’re getting the best care and get to spend your birthday at home,” said another.

The band confirmed that tickets for the original December dates would remain valid for the new shows with instructions for refunds shared soon.
