Multiplatinum pop star Miley Cyrus finds herself on the Academy Awards trail this season, for her role behind the scenes on the James Cameron blockbuster Avatar: Fire and Ash.
While on the red carpet for the Palm Springs International Film Festival last Saturday, Cyrus told Chris Gardner of The Hollywood Reporter that she’d be happy to return to the movies — beyond being featured on their soundtracks.

“Love to,” Cyrus said of the prospect of a return to acting. “I hope some brilliant mind in here has the right thing for me. Let’s see. Remind them. If someone genius comes by, be like, ‘Hey, Miley is here.’”
Cyrus was honored with an award for her Avatar: Fire and Ash song “Dream as One.”
When asked what, exactly, Gardner should tell said geniuses, Cyrus expounded on how she could be utilized.
“Just tell them, ‘What do they want me to do.’ I would love to go into someone else’s world,” Cyrus said. “I’m the boss in my own world.”

Cyrus did turn up in a brief role in front of the lens — her first in half a decade — for last year’s underappreciated road trip crime comedy Drive Away Dolls from Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke, one of this writer’s favorite movies of 2024. She did also lend her voice to the animated series Human Resources in 2023.
Before that, Cyrus hadn’t been featured in a film or TV show since a memorable 2019 Black Mirror episode.
“I think of my life in quarters, so I like to kind of think about who and what I want to be or do within the first quarter of that year and don’t think too far ahead, or you end up committing to all these things that maybe that’s not what is planned for you ultimately,” Cyrus told Gardner. “So within my first quarter, it’s just celebration and kind of tying up what I’ve started with Avatar.”
For now, Cyrus seems to be a frontrunner to earn her first Oscar. Beyond the Palm Springs honor, she’s picked up a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song for the third time with “Dream As One.” Academy Award nominations will be announced Thursday, Jan. 22.
