Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has used a question from the Labor backbench to attack divisions within the Liberal Party.

“While we’re building more homes for Australians, those opposite are busy tearing down their own home. They’re obsessed with cutting each other down, but they never want to cut your taxes, or cut the cost of living. They can’t stand each other, Mr Speaker, but they all stand for cutting Medicare,” the prime minister said.

“They love fighting, but they never fight for Australia. They just fight each other because it goes to their core values. And we’ve seen that with the extraordinary launch of a leadership campaign that didn’t have a single new policy idea. It was just the vibe they got out there. They got out there, not a single new idea.”

Albanese was interrupted on a point of order on relevance, which was quickly dismissed as the question included references to leadership – a set-up for the attack.

The prime minister continued the sledges, saying: “I was waiting for the leadership candidate to say vote for me, and I support world peace. That was the substance that was in there.

“The problem isn’t the leader. The problem is that whoever sits there… will just be another Liberal.”
