Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos were looked at by many across the NFL as a dark-horse Super Bowl contender before the season started. So far, they have done nothing to change that as the Broncos are 7-2 and atop a loaded AFC West that features the Los Angeles Chargers and the Kansas City Chiefs as well.
One of the biggest reasons the Broncos had such high expectations is because of a defense that is as good as any in the league. The Broncos have 40 sacks on the year, which is 12 more than the second place Detroit Lions.
While the offense doesn’t always look how a Super Bowl contending offense is expected to look, Nix and that group have shown all year the ability to make the big play in big moments.
During an episode of The Arena Gridiron, former Broncos Super Bowl champion Aqib Talib made sure to defend Nix when comparing him to another second year quarterback, Drake Maye.
“You’re not taking the best fourth quarter quarterback in the NFL,” Talib asked. “Bo came in as a rookie and took his team to the playoffs and it means a lot to me. “
Now, part of the reason that Nix has had to lead so many fourth quarter comebacks is that he has been inconsistent at times throughout the rest of the game. However, he has shown time and time again that he can make the big play late. Never was this more obvious than when he led the Broncos to the most improbable victory of the season when they scored 33 points in the fourth to beat the New York Giants.
Last week, he was once again money on the last drive against the Houston Texans to get them in field goal range for the victory.
The Broncos will be in action on Thursday night when they host the Las Vegas Raiders. While the team has been in many close games, if they are having to win this game in the fourth quarter, that might be a more telling sign that the team isn’t ready to contend yet.
