Reigning Queensland Cup rookie of the year Latrell Siegwalt will move to Sydney at season’s end, having inked a two-year contract under Wayne Bennett at the Rabbitohs.

The 24-year-old was plucked from obscurity in Wagga Wagga by former Redcliffe Dolphins coach, and current Broncos assistant, Ben Te’o, and starred at fullback and five-eighth en route to the grand final.

After picking up a train and trial deal at the Broncos, Siegwalt’s 19 games for the Souths Logan Magies this year have yielded eight tries, 13 try assists, 18 linebreak assists and an average of 128 running metres a game, as he vied to replace Tristan Sailor as the understudy to Brisbane’s star fullback Reece Walsh.

Siegwalt will instead join South Sydney on a supplementary deal in 2026, before being elevated to the top 30 in 2027 – by which time veteran five-eighth Cody Walker, who will 37, is likely to retire.

“Latrell is a mature young footballer looking for his chance to play at the NRL level and with hard work and dedication he can earn that opportunity here at South Sydney,” Rabbitohs head of recruitment and retention, Mark Ellison, said.

“He’s passionate about his football and has grown up as a South Sydney supporter, and he’s told us it would be a dream to pull on the red and green jersey.”
