The Denver Broncos are in Indianapolis at the NFL combine scouting players in preparation of the 2026 NFL draft, but they also need to start searching for a new assistant coach.

Multiple reports indicated that Broncos quality control assistant Favian Upshaw was leaving the team to become the new running backs coach for the national championship runners-up Miami Hurricanes.

“Upshaw is a well-regarded young coach in Denver’s building,” Luca Evans of the Denver Post reported. “Has been working under Lou Ayeni with RBs for 3 years. Gets a huge shot.”

Upshaw has a history with Miami head coach Mario Cristobal. He signed with Florida International back in 2012 when Cristobal was the Panthers’ head coach. Now, he reunites with Cristobal on his staff with the Hurricanes, who will be a legit national championship contender again in 2026.

Upshaw will replace Matt Merritt, who left to take the running backs coach position with the Arizona Cardinals. Under Merritt, Miami averaged 151.8 yards rushing per game with 28 touchdowns in 2025.

In his first stint as RBs coach at Georgia Southern, Upshaw helped lead a rushing attack that averages 192.5 yards per game.

Upshaw has plenty of talent to work with in Miami — a group that includes 2025 starter Mark Fletcher, who rushed for 1,192 yards and 12 touchdowns, plus CharMar Brown (474 yards, even TDs), Girard Pringle Jr. (375 yards, four TDs) and Jordan Lyle (108 yards, one TD).
