Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton took some time to speak out about current North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick recently.

Following Belichick’s first season with the Tar Heels, there have been serious questions about whether or not he’ll get a second. He led the program to a dismal year that ended with a 4-8 record, not even becoming bowl eligible.

All season long, the team was a complete disappointment. For the NFL coaching legend, it was a piece of humble pie. However, it was just one season and turning a program around in one year doesn’t happen very often.

With that being said, Payton spoke out with a surprising opinion about what he wants to see in Belichick’s future.

Payton wants to see Belichick make a return to the NFL at some point in the future before he calls it a career.

“I’ll be honest with you, I miss him not being in the league,” Payton said. “I miss him not being in the league, and I wouldn’t be surprised, and I would be somewhat hopeful that he ends up back in the league. We’d all be better for it. He’s something.”

Belichick is arguably the best NFL head coach of all-time. His struggles after Tom Brady departed to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers took a bit of his legacy away and his season at North Carolina didn’t help his case either. But, no one can take away what he did during his time with the New England Patriots.

As a whole, his NFL career has seen Belichick compile an impressive 302-165 record. He led the Patriots to a 266-121 record.

Not only was Belichick a great regular season coach, he led New England to six Super Bowl wins. That success is what has made him a household name. Coming back to the NFL to finish things out on a more positive note than he ended with New England would be awesome to see.

So far this season, Payton has been able to lead the Broncos to being an elite contender. Through Week 13, Denver holds a 10-2 record. That places them at No. 2 in the AFC.

It will be interesting to see what the future has in store for both Belichick and Payton. Perhaps a return to the NFL will be in the cards for Belichick when he closes his chapter with the Tar Heels.
