As the outside and online world complains about the Pro Bowl and its selection, most notably the addition of Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders, the rookie signal-caller isn’t worrying about it.
In San Francisco for Super Bowl week and to compete in the “Pro Bowl Games” on Tuesday, along with the rest of his AFC teammates, the polarizing QB gave his open, raw thoughts on being chosen for the postseason festivities.

“I was surprised,” he said in a media scrum. “It wasn’t like I was just sitting there and expecting it. I’m not going to lie, a lot of the time I’m taking it day by day. … If you’d [told] me this was going to happen at the beginning of the year, I couldn’t say that would have happened.”
Sanders broke a two-decade streak of Browns rookie quarterbacks losing their debut game with the franchise as a fifth-round pick out of Colorado. Following the trade of fellow Pro Bowler QB Joe Flacco and an injury to also-rookie Dillon Gabriel, Sanders was given the chance to start for the second half of the season.
Although there were glimpses of Sanders living up to the franchise quarterback tag he held for most of his college career, unforced errors and mistakes plagued him for most of the season. He ended his opening campaign in the pros with more interceptions than touchdowns, which has been pointed out ad nauseam since he was announced as a Pro Bowler.
“It’s amazing,” Sanders admitted when asked what this selection meant to him. “I get to be here around all these great guys and great coaches. It’s surreal.”
The Pro Bowl event will be tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 3, starting at 8 p.m. ET at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.
