Queenslanders will receive more cuts to everyday expenses, with the state government announcing vouchers for children’s sport and reduced fees for car registration.

The cost-of-living measures will be handed down in Tuesday’s state budget, and follow recently announced 50 cent fares for public transport, and rebates for electricity bills.

Queenslanders who drive a four-cylinder car will save more than $80.

Queenslanders are expected to see a 20 per cent reduction in vehicle registration fees, meaning savings of almost $85 on a four-cylinder car. The fee will drop to $338.75, excluding compulsory third-party insurance.

Premier Steven Miles on Saturday announced the measure, which will apply to all light vehicle registrations for a 12-month period from September 16, 2024.

Motorists will see the discount on renewal notices sent to them from August 5.

Miles said the initiative would save the 5.7 million light car owners hundreds of dollars that could instead be spent on groceries, rent or mortgages.

“Twenty per cent off rego builds on $1000 energy rebates going to every Queensland household, and 50 cent public transport,” he said.

The government also announced an expansion of its FairPlay vouchers program, which will rise from $150 to $200 for children aged between five and 17.

There will be 200,000 vouchers available – up from the previous 50,000 – which can be redeemed up to June 2025 on kids’ sport and active recreation.
