Although one typically assumes they’ll become a grandparent later in life, some lucky few get the rare chance to be young grandmas and grandpas — celebrities included.
Stars like Whoopi Goldberg, Jim Carrey and Mick Jagger all became grandparents before the age of 55. In January 2026, former Bachelorette Emily Maynard learned she was officially a grandma at 39 after her oldest daughter, Ricki, gave birth to a baby at age 20.
Goldberg’s daughter, Alexandrea Martin Dean, was just 16 when she got pregnant. “It would not have been what I would have chosen for her, but at the same time, I thought, ‘What a great thing that she’s confident enough in me to tell me,’” Goldberg told the Los Angeles Times in 1989.
Goldberg’s granddaughter Amara Skye Dean was born on November 13, 1989 — which also happened to be her grandma’s birthday. (Alexandrea also shares two children with her now-ex-husband, Bernard Dean.)
