“I feel for that young man,” he said. “There shouldn’t be any blame for what’s happened out there last night, other than to say that we’ll continue our inquiries so that the coroner can make a determination.”
NSW Premier Chris Minns said the girl’s death was shocking and would be subject to a coronial inquiry.
“Today is a moment to say that the sympathies from everyone in NSW is with that family,” he said.
Narrabri Shire Council mayor Darrell Tiemens said the incident was devastating for the “beautiful people” of Baan Baa.
“Our hearts go out to the family of the little girl,” he said.
“This devastating event has deeply affected our close-knit community, and our thoughts are with the young train driver, the emergency service workers and the hospital staff who responded under such heartbreaking circumstances.
“For these frontline workers it’s hard enough dealing with an adult fatality, but dealing with a young child when many of these people are parents themselves is so difficult.”
Tiemens described Baan Baa as a “one-pub” town with a small church and community hall. At the time of the 2021 census it recorded 166 residents in 47 families.
