Sunday was a great day for the Dallas Cowboys. First, the team won an instant classifc against the New York Giants, overcoming an early double-digit deficit to get a 40-37 overtime victory.
After the game, the team announced that it would be signing defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. On Sunday night, the details of the contract was announced that the Cowboys would be paying him $3.5 million for one year, with the potential for him to make $6 million if he hits incentives.
The two sides have been in constant dialogue over the last week, as Clowney visited the team on Wednesday, but didn’t sign a contract.
While the team was able to get the win on Sunday, it has become very evident the last two weeks how much the team misses Micah Parsons.
In the game against the Giants, quarterback Russell Wilson threw for 450 yards, just two yards short of a career-high. While the Cowboys were able to get three sacks, their cornerbacks are having to guard for a long time and receivers are eventually getting open.
Now, Clowney isn’t going to come in and instantly fill the role of Parsons, but he has continued to be a solid pass rusher who also does a good job stopping the run the last couple of season.
Last season, he played in 14 games for the Carolina Panthers, finishing with 46 tackles and 5.5 sacks. Just two years ago, he put together one of the best seasons of his career as a member of the Baltimore Ravens. In that season, he finished with 43 tackles and 9.5 sacks.
At this point in his career, Clowney can be a very good rotational defensive lineman. He isn’t the game-wrecker people expected him to be when he entered the NFL, but he can come in and make the Cowboys better on the defensive line.
With this being a one-year deal, this is just the type of move a team like the Cowboys need to make. At only $3.5 million guaranteed, this is a low-cost type of move to provide the team some depth. And if he is able to go out and earn the full $6 million, that means was better than the team could have hoped for.
Clowney will be on the team as the team travels to Chicago next week to take on Caleb Williams and an 0-2 Bears team coming off a 52-21 loss to Detroit in Week 2.
