Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks made the national title for the third straight year – and fourth title appearance in the past five seasons.

While each of those seasons can be seen as a successful campaign to most programs, South Carolina is different. The standard set under Staley is that of national championships, of which she’s won three with the Gamecocks in her tenure.

The program fell short of that standard on Sunday night when the team suffered a brutal 79-51 loss to UCLA in the national title game. It’s the second straight blowout national title loss for South Carolina after last year’s 82-59 drubbing at the hands of UConn.

The basketball world flocked to social media following Sunday’s game to suggest Staley make some changes.

“Two years in a row now where South Carolina has laid an absolute egg in the natty. Two different teams but [expletive]-whoopings in both games. Dawn and company will need to do some reflecting to make sure these things don’t happen when they get back,” basketball analyst Chris Williamson said.

Fans agreed.

“A 30 piece in the national championship game is crazy. Two years in a row is worse. Dawn got to get in the lab this summer and figure out why we keep underperforming when we get to the championship game. This will be the 2nd year in a row we’ve got to this point and had no fight,” said another fan.

A third suggested, “One thing Dawn know how to do is get blown out in a championship game.”

Staley has won three national titles, but might need to make a few changes for a fourth.
