Elton John was not going to let an eye infection stop him from enjoying his new musical at London’s West End theater district.
The “Rocket Man” hitmaker, 77, who is known for wearing statement eyeglasses, attended The Devil Wears Prada musical premiere on Sunday in the English capital.
He told the audience he could not see what was happening on stage, but was delighted to be there nonetheless.
“As some of you may know, I have had issues and now I have lost my sight. I haven’t been able to see the performance but I have enjoyed it,” John said on stage and thanked his husband, David Furnish, who was also in attendance.
“To my husband, who’s been my rock because I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews. It’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it and it sounded good tonight,” he added.
John revealed to fans in September that he had suffered an eye infection that limited his vision in one eye.
“I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye,” he wrote in an Instagram post.
He also explained that the condition has affected his ability to make new music.
“There’s hope and encouragement that it will be okay, but I’m kind of stuck at the moment. Going into the studio and recording, I don’t know,” he told Good Morning America in an interview.
Newsweek has contacted John’s representatives by email for comment.
