A massive fire has engulfed the head office and factory outlet of a Sydney furniture company, sending black smoke billowing into the sky and brick walls tumbling to the ground.

The industrial fire on Beresford Avenue at Greenacre took hold about 3pm on Tuesday, and is expected to remain active “for a considerable amount of time”.

More than 50 firefighters are on the scene of the fire, which is “well alight”, Fire and Rescue NSW said.

Water supply had been a problem, Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said.

“We are relay-pumping water from remote hydrants to get enough water onto the fire,” he said.

“All efforts currently are to stop the fire spreading to adjoining properties.”

An exclusion zone has been established by NSW Police with people urged to avoid the area and those nearby advised to close doors and windows.
