Flags will fly at half-staff this weekend in three U.S. states to honor local losses.

Why It Matters

Such orders are deeply meaningful symbols of communal mourning and respect, reflecting both the sacrifices made by individuals in the service of their communities and the nation’s traditions of public honor.

Flag-lowering ceremonies are a visible and solemn tribute, offering citizens a collective way to recognize loss and pay homage to service.

What To Know

The governors of Minnesota, Hawaii, and Maryland have ordered flags at state buildings to be flown at half-staff in remembrance of recently deceased public servants.

Minnesota

Governor Tim Walz directed flags at all state buildings to fly at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, January 10, 2026, in honor and remembrance of Firefighter Andy Ziegler.

Ziegler served the Milaca Fire Department for 15 years and died on December 28, 2025. He is also described as a “devoted husband, father, and grandfather, whose humor, authenticity, and generosity left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him.”

Individuals, businesses, and organizations are encouraged to join in honoring his memory by lowering their flags.

Hawaii

Governor Josh Green ordered the United States and Hawaii state flags to be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol, all state offices and agencies, and all Hawaii National Guard facilities from sunrise January 9 through sunset January 11, 2026.

The action honors Hawaii County Fire Chief Kazuo Todd, who died unexpectedly on December 14, 2025. Chief Todd’s funeral service and procession are scheduled for January 10.

Maryland

Governor Wes Moore ordered the Maryland flag lowered to half-staff effective January 7, 2026, to honor Detective Paul Hoke of the Baltimore County Police Department. Detective Hoke died on January 2, 2026, following a medical emergency in the line of duty on December 31, 2025.

The order remains in effect until further notice regarding raising the flag, per an official announcement.
