The Philadelphia Eagles know their NFC East rivals, the New York Giants well. Clearly, there’s something they saw in the soon-to-be ex-interim head coach, Mike Kafka, as they reportedly scheduled an interview with him for their vacant offensive coordinator job.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the interview took place on Saturday. Kafka is the second known offensive coordinator candidate for the Eagles.

A Brief History of Kafka

The former fourth-round pick out of Northwestern started his playing career with the Eagles in 2010. After a five-year career of bouncing around many teams, Kafka went into coaching in 2016.

His first NFL organization was under Andy Reid’s staff on the Kansas City Chiefs.

Kafka’s Giants stint started in 2022. He was hired as the team’s offensive coordinator under Brian Daboll. Over time, Kafka landed the title of assistant head coach, while maintaining his duties as the OC.

Amid the 2025 NFL season, which proved to be extremely rocky for the Giants, Kafka ended up seeing a temporary promotion. When Brian Daboll was let go midway through the season, Kafka was elevated to interim head coach.

The expectation was that the Giants would cast a wider net of candidates over the offseason. Once John Harbaugh was let go from the Baltimore Ravens, Kafka was quickly forgotten.

The Giants couldn’t make anything official just yet, but Kafka’s days in New York seem numbered. All signs point to Harbaugh getting a major deal to become the next head coach of the Giants. While Kafka could get a call from the veteran head coach to come back on the staff, the expectation is that Harbaugh is going to dip back in the Baltimore bag for his New York offensive coordinator.

An Awkward Battle for the Eagles’ Job

The Eagles have two known candidates who have interviewed with the team at this point. On Friday, it was reported that former Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson met with the team.

While Kafka met with the Eagles, the expectation is that Brian Daboll will get a shot at the job as well. According to reports, the Eagles are targeting several former head coaches, including Daboll, Mike McDaniel, and Kevin Stefanski. So far, none of those three candidates have met with the team.

While rival fan bases don’t typically love the idea of their former players and coaches joining a rival organization, the Giants shouldn’t feel any discomfort. At this point, they know they are locking in the most notable head coaching candidate of the current cycle.

In addition, the Kafka/Daboll combo didn’t exactly do wonders for New York. After a 3-14 season in 2024, the Giants improved slightly, with a 4-13 record. They placed last in the NFC East.
