New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh has been on the lookout for an offensive coordinator, hoping to fill the position on the coaching staff, though it is still empty, and another candidate has come off the board.
Harbaugh is attempting an organization-wide overhaul of how the team does business and operates – starting with the brain trust.
He has let go of multiple coaches from previous regimes, and the veteran coach is working to bring in several new voices to spearhead the rebuild.
While there have already been notable additions, one spot remains open and important —the offensive coordinator role.
The modern NFL is centered more than ever on successful offenses, and the Giants have a talented quarterback in Jaxson Dart who needs to develop.
New York needs to bring in someone who can help Dart progress, though a candidate has been taken off the board: Davis Webb, the former pass game coordinator for the Denver Broncos, has been promoted to offensive coordinator.
Webb was expected to move into the role after former offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi was let go, though the number of openings left it unclear.
According to Albert Breer of MMQB, Webb received interest from the Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants for their respective coordinator openings.
Who is left for the Giants to hire?
The Giants were reportedly set to appoint former Baltimore Ravens head coach Todd Monken, who served as the Ravens’ offensive coordinator under Harbaugh.
Most of the other teams have already hired their coaches and put together their staffs. During this go-around of the coaching course, teams have been hiring the buzzworthy offensive coordinators as head coaches, limiting the Giants’ options.
Harbaugh has interviewed former Giants quarterback Alex Tanney regarding the offensive coordinator opening, along with Jim Bob Cooter, Kliff Kingsbury, and Brian Callahan.
Out of the four options left for the Giants, Kingsbury stands out as the most interesting name, given his success with developing Jayden Daniels and his notable experience both in the college and professional ranks.
Most of the remaining names have some experience, which could soothe Harbaugh’s concerns about the opening, providing a steady option for his first, so the team can build on it.
