The New York Giants have struck gold with their rookie duo of quarterback Jaxson Dart and fellow rookie running back Cam Skattebo.

But things turned bleak on Sunday when Skattebo was severely injured during the team’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

During the 38-20 loss, Skattebo’s ankle was caught under Eagles linebacker Zach Baun as he tried to catch a pass over the middle. His right foot twisted sharply to the side in what was such a gruesome injury that the TV crew didn’t replay it. Skattebo was ruled out for the remainder of the game and taken to a local hospital for evaluation, the Giants announced.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Giants later confirmed that Skattebo was scheduled to have surgery Sunday night at a hospital in the Philadelphia area.

On Monday, the took to social media to send a heartfelt message to Skattebo as he recovers from the brutal injury.

“Rest, recover and reload,” they stated along with a blue heart emoji. “You’re just getting started Cam.”

Giants’ Cam Skattebo Breaks Silence After Suffering Major Injury vs Eagles

Before exiting the game on Sunday, Skattebo recorded his seventh touchdown of the season with an 18-yard pass from Dart. Following the game, both Dart and Giants head coach Brian Daboll discussed the horrifying injury during a postgame press conference.

“Yeah, feel absolutely terrible for the young man,” Daboll said. “Obviously, saw it looked bad. I know you feel for anybody on your team that goes down and has a really bad injury and I feel … I know the players feel the same way about (Skattebo).”

Dart added that he’s “devastated” for his friend and colleague.

“It’s my boy, man,” he said, according to the Giants’ official website. “So, seeing him going down and reacting to what happened, that just sucks. It’s the worst part of this game.”

When asked if Dart said anything to his injured friend on the field, he said that he did, but that he’s going to keep that conversation private.

During the game, lineman Greg Van Roten was the first player to signal for medical help. He opened up about that moment.

“I saw him on the ground with his leg trapped,” Van Roten said. “When he pulled it out, you could see his foot was the wrong way. Obviously, that is not normal. I just wanted [Skattebo] to stay down, called the trainers out, get the cart. Put the [ankle] back basically. It’s hard to see stuff like that.”
