Insider tips built with Gemini

One of the most intriguing updates is the arrival of “know before you go” tips, powered by Google’s Gemini AI. When you look up restaurants, hotels or event venues in Maps, scroll down and you’ll see insights collected from reviews and web data. This will include information such as parking advice, dress code, reservation tips or off-menu favorites. It’s like tapping into a local expert who knows the place inside and out, saving you the stress of discovering surprises once you arrive. 

These insider tips are rolling out now in the US on Android and iOS.

A smarter Explore tab to unearth local gems

If you finish holiday errands early and wonder what to do next, or if you just don’t know which coffee shop is worth trying, the upgraded Explore tab is there to help. A swipe-up will show trending eateries, activities and hidden spots near you. Trusted sources, such as Lonely Planet, OpenTable or local influencers, contribute curated lists, making it easier to discover places you might otherwise miss during your travels. 

The updated Explore tab will start rolling out globally on Android and iOS this month.

Predictive EV charger availability for winter road trips

Planning a road trip to visit family? If you’re driving an electric car, nothing ruins the mood like pulling into a charging station only to find every charger in use. 

The new EV charger availability feature predicts the number of charging ports that will be free when you arrive, using a combination of real-time data and historical patterns. That way, you’re less likely to be stuck in a lineup, which is especially helpful when holiday traffic hits.

EV charger availability predictions will begin rolling out next week on Android Auto and cars with Google built-in.

Leave reviews under a fun holiday alias

Want to spread some holiday cheer (and boost a favorite shop) without signing your full name? Now on Google Maps, you can choose a nickname and profile picture when leaving reviews. 

Whether you’re “Eager Elf,” “Secret Santa, or “Hermy,” your feedback is still tied to your Google account behind the scenes, but you can protect your identity publicly. 
The feature will be rolled out globally on Android, iOS and desktop later this month.
