A TikTok video showing a man filling a water bottle from a street drain before drinking it has sparked universal disgust and concern online, with viewers calling the footage “deeply upsetting.”

The clip, posted by @_d3nt3d_, shows water flowing along a curb and into a drain as the man calmly collects it in a bottle, takes a drink and walks away.

The caption: “Only in the glorious United States of America,” has fueled debate over public health risks and the circumstances that may have led to the moment.

The viral video quickly circulated across TikTok, garnering 5.5 million views, and drawing strong reactions from viewers unsettled by what they saw. While some questioned whether the act was staged, others focused on the potential dangers of consuming untreated water from urban runoff.

Health experts have long warned that water found in streets or drainage systems can carry a wide range of contaminants.

According to the National Capital Poison Center, “Contaminants can end up in your tap water at the water’s source including reservoirs, lakes, rivers or underground water, as well as by traveling through the plumbing.”

The organization notes that runoff and environmental exposure can introduce harmful substances such as chemicals, waste and bacteria into water sources.

The Risks Extend Beyond Visible Pollution

Poison Control states that water can contain “biological contaminants [that] include bacteria (such as campylobacter, E. coli, legionella, salmonella and shigella), parasites (such as giardia or cryptosporidium), protozoa and viruses.”

These contaminants can lead to a range of health issues, particularly when consumed untreated.

Federal health guidance echoes those concerns.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that “Rainwater is not necessarily safe to drink without first removing germs and chemicals from it,” according to its overview on water collection and safety.

Even water that appears clean can carry invisible hazards, the agency notes, adding that “even when rainwater looks clean, it can contain germs and chemicals that could make you sick.”

‘The worst video I’ll see today’

The viral clip prompted a wave of reactions from TikTok users, many expressing shock at the behavior captured on camera.

“No, your scream was definitely necessary,” one user wrote in response to the person filming, who can be heard screaming.

Another added, “This is probably the worst video I’ll see today.”

A third commenter said simply: “This was deeply upsetting.”

While the video does not provide context about the man’s situation, it has fueled broader conversations online about access to clean drinking water, homelessness and public health awareness. Some viewers speculated about desperation or lack of resources, while others focused on the immediate health risks posed by drinking untreated water from a street drain.

Medical guidance suggests that consuming contaminated water can lead to both short-term and long-term health effects.

Poison Control states that “the health impact of drinking contaminated water depends on the contaminant(s). Most common are contaminants that cause vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain,” while more serious exposure can affect organs or lead to chronic illness.

The video remains widely shared across social media platforms, continuing to draw reactions as users weigh in on what they saw and what it might represent.
