One of the oldest rivalries in college football will be renewed on Saturday when California makes the short trip to Stanford for The Big Game. The two Bay Area nemeses will face off for the 128th time, and the Golden Bears will hope to continue feasting on this particular prey after winning each of the last four encounters between the pair.
The Cardinal still leads the all-time series with 65 wins compared to California’s 51 (along with 11 draws), but the Bears have done their bit to level things up slightly under head coach Justin Wilcox. The ninth-year veteran was elated to see his side overturn an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter of last year’s matchup to win 24-21, and California is high on confidence after a dramatic win over Louisville a fortnight ago.
Quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele had a breakout performance in that 29-26 triumph over the ranked Cardinals, throwing for 323 yards and two touchdowns in Kentucky. The Golden Bears would settle for beating just the one Cardinal this time around, however, as the two titans of the Bay Area reignite this iconic rivalry.
