A sci-fi box office bomb starring Deadpool & Wolverine star Hugh Jackman will start streaming on Netflix in August.

Jackman, of course, is currently enjoying the blockbuster success of Deadpool & Wolverine, which features the actor’s classic X-Men character for the first time since his solo swan song Logan in 2017. Ryan Reynolds stars as Deadpool opposite Jackman, along with Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Paradox, Aaron Stanford as Pyro. Several others high-profile actors make cameo appearances in the film.

In between Logan and Deadpool & Wolverine, though, Jackman starred in a variety of other films, including the blockbuster movie musical The Greatest Showman, the stop-motion animated comedy Missing Link and the family drama The Son.

Four years after Logan, Jackman re-entered the sci-film movie realm in 2021 with the sci-fi mystery Reminiscence, directed by Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy.

Jackman stars in Reminiscence as Nick Bannister, a detective of the mind who along with his business partner, Emily “Watts” Sanders (Thandiwe Newton), operates a device that enables clients to relive memories.

However, after Nick begins a romantic relationship with a new client, Mae (Jackman’s Greatest Showman co-star Rebecca Ferguson), she suddenly disappears. Nick in turn uses the machine to relieve his memories with Mae, only to discover there’s something more to the mystery of her disappearance.

According to Netflix, Reminiscence will begin streaming on the service on Tuesday, August 6.

How Did Audiences And Critics Receive ‘Reminiscence’?

The release of Reminiscence was complicated by the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic since it debuted in theaters and simultaneously on HBO Max (now Max) on August 20, 2021.

As part of Warner Bros.’ 2021 strategy in response to the COVID crisis, the studio released all of its 2021 films day-and-date in theaters and on HBO Max, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Per the arrangement, all of Warner Bros.’ films released in 2021 would stream on HBO Max for only a month and would return in conjunction with the studio’s regular home entertainment release pattern.

According to The Numbers, Reminiscence earned $3.9 million domestically and $11.5 in international ticket sales for a worldwide box office tally of $15.4 million. The box office tracker reports that Reminiscence had a $67.9 million production budget, not including prints and advertising.

Adding insult to the film’s box office injury, Rotten Tomatoes critics trashed Reminiscence with a 36% “rotten” rating based on 201 reviews.

The RT Critics Consensus for the movie reads, “Although Reminiscence isn’t lacking narrative ambition, its uncertain blend of sci-fi action and noir thriller mostly provokes memories of better films.”

RT users weren’t much kinder to Reminiscence, giving it a 37% “rotten” Audience Score based on 1,000-plus ratings.

RT’s audience summary reads, “Reminiscence has some great ideas, but clunky dialogue and flat characters keep this sci-fi noir from ever really coming to life.”

Netflix viewers can determine whether Reminiscence is memorable or not when it debuts on the streaming service on August 6.

Deadpool & Wolverine, meanwhile, is playing in theaters nationwide.
