Donald Trump Jr.’s public endorsement of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has drawn fresh scrutiny online, with critics arguing the message has “not aged well” as the longtime leader lost the country’s parliamentary elections on Sunday.

In an April 12 post on X, Trump Jr. urged voters in Hungary to back Orbán, describing him as “my father’s friend and ally” and praising him as a leader aligned with a “Hungary First” agenda. The post, which included a photo of Trump Jr. standing alongside Orbán, quickly gained traction, drawing thousands of interactions.

“To our friends in Hungary, we hope you will vote for independent thinking and for someone who stands for Hungary First,” Trump Jr. wrote. “We hope you will vote for my father’s friend and ally… I hope you will support Viktor Orbán!”

Why It Matters

Trump Jr.’s endorsement highlights the close relationship between the Trump family and Orbán, who has been embraced by segments of the American conservative movement as a model of nationalist governance. Orbán has attended conservative events in the U.S., including CPAC, and has been praised by Donald Trump for his hardline positions on immigration and national sovereignty.

On Sunday, Orbán lost the country’s closely-watched parliamentary elections when he conceded to Péter Magyar, a former member of Orbán’s far-right, populist Fidesz party.

What People Are Saying

Several commentators and social media users responded critically to the post, particularly in light of the election result.

Lars Fløe Nielsen, the founder of software company Sitecore who has previously described himself as a social liberal, wrote on X: “That aged well, didn’t it? Despite your efforts.” Nielsen went on to accuse Orbán of corruption and of undermining the European Union, adding that, “Your vassal in Europe is gone”

Other criticism came from users who have frequently posted opposition to President Trump and the MAGA movement.

X user Frank Lee, who has shared anti‑Trump commentary in past posts, wrote: “THAT WENT WELL, EH DONNY?” before adding that Trump Jr.’s “brand of autocratic fascism just got booted.”

Another user, @c_crawdad, who has posted anti‑MAGA content, offered a more succinct reaction, writing: “Aged like raw milk…”

Political commentator Jose Ortega also weighed in, writing: “Nah, that guy sucks. He’s as corrupt as Trump and the Trump family.” Ortega has previously been critical of both Orbán and U.S. conservative politics.
