Heading into the NFL offseason, the New York Jets are facing quite a few questions that must be answered in order for the franchise to get back to being a potential playoff contender.

After another disappointing season in 2025 that saw the Jets finish with a 3-14 record, the front office will need to get busy. One of the biggest question marks that needs to be answered this offseason comes at the quarterback position.

Last offseason, New York took a gamble on former Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields. He was given a two-year deal to become the new starting quarterback for the Jets. That move didn’t pay off.

That being said, there are quite a few options New York could consider this offseason.

One option could be to pursue a quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft. However, the Jets saw Oregon standout quarterback Dante Moore decide to return to college for another year. There are no other first-round options after Fernando Mendoza that appear to be clear-cut franchise quarterbacks.

Another avenue to find a quarterback could come via the trade market. With that in mind, one potential target has been suggested.

Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine has named San Francisco 49ers signal caller Mac Jones as a possible fit for New York.

“Mac Jones could be the next reclamation project who actually turns out to be a good starter,” Ballentine wrote. “He was 5-3 as the starter for the 49ers this season, filling in admirably when Brock Purdy went down with an injury.”

Jones could follow in the footsteps of recent success stories like Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones. He played very well for the 49ers in 2025 when Brock Purdy was out. Perhaps being given another chance to be a full-time starter would pay off.

During the 2025 season, Jones played in 11 total games. He made eight starts for San Francisco, completing 69.6 percent of his pass attempts for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions.

At just 27 years old, Jones still has plenty of time to be a long-term franchise option for a team. The Jets have to find a player who can lead them into the future. Taking a chance on Jones would make a lot of sense.

Expect to hear plenty of rumors surrounding the New York franchise entering the offseason. Jones may not end up being a target for the Jets, but it’s an option worth considering at the very least.
