A career coach has taken to social media after spotting a major shift in the job market that has netizens up in arms.
In a video posted to TikTok, Melissa Marcus (@missy23232) explained that she is starting to see companies post jobs with descriptions that are less promising for job seekers.
She noted, “All over my LinkedIn feed, there are job postings now that are like, ‘if you’re looking for a 9-to-5 and you don’t want to be challenged, then this job is not for you.’
“Corporate America is shifting.”
Marcus explained that in her career, she has seen an “ebb and flow” in the way corporate America handles the job market.
“The minute that the job market becomes such that they are in control, the corporate culture starts to fall apart,” she said. “‘We don’t care about work-life balance,’ ‘we don’t care about you in the big scheme of things.’
“I’m making a very bold and very blanket statement. This is not for every company, but the vast majority.”
‘So terrible’
She added that tech jobs in particular have started using language that suggests they don’t care anymore.
“‘If you want to come work for us, we’re going to work you harder, and we’re going to pay you less, and you’re going to love it,'” she said.
“And if you don’t, guess what? You probably can’t go anywhere else, because there’s nowhere else to go, because the job market is so terrible.”
TikTok users flocked to the comments to weigh in, with one writing, “We need to return to small businesses dominating the economic landscape. Healthy market competition is destroyed through corporate monopolies.”
Another agreed with Marcus’s observation: “It’s true. I saw a job description that said ‘ability to manage a heavy workload.’ I thought, why would they put that in the description?”
“This is the first year my company did ‘peanut butter raises,'” a third commenter added. “I knew they didn’t care already, now they’re just laughing in our faces.”
Finally, one user is looking to the future: “All I’ve got to say is once the pendulum swings back…I don’t wanna hear not one singular person in leadership complain about employees not giving them notice.”
The Job Market
The American job market has seen a lot of turmoil in recent years, as Newsweek has covered.
According to one report, millions of Americans are “functionally unemployed,” and that number is expected to keep rising.
The job market is also facing little to no growth in 2026, according to a leading economist.
As a result of the market, many Americans are returning to school in an effort to boost their qualifications and reset their careers.
Newsweek has reached out to Marcus for comment via email.
