The Kansas City Chiefs desperately need to revamp their running game. They averaged just 106.6 rushing yards per game last season, which was good for 25th in the league.
Former offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is back, and he’s a running back guru. As such, expert sites like Tankathon and NFL Mock Draft Database have them taking Notre Dame star Jeremiyah Love, the No. 1 running back prospect in this class.
However, that may not be the case. According to NFL insider Matthew Berry, intel from the NFL Scouting Combine suggests the Chiefs won’t have a chance to land the playmaking running back.
Apparently, he might be off the board by the time they’re on the clock at No. 9.
“Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love has been mocked to a lot of places in early expert mocks and worth noting that FantasyLife.com’s Matthew Freedman, the most accurate NFL draft ranker of the last five years, has Love mocked to the Saints at No 8. But I heard a very surprising team for Love at the Combine: The Titans,” Berry wrote.
The Titans have the No. 4 pick, so they could trade down a couple of spots and still get Love if they want to. As for the Saints, they’ll be on the clock right before Andy Reid’s team.
The Chiefs have plenty of issues to address on their aging roster, including the offensive line. They might pivot to promising prospects like Spencer Fano, Vega Ioane, or Monroe Freeling if Love is no longer up for grabs, and trading down wouldn’t be a far-fetched idea, either.
Then again, with both Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco slated to be free agents, Love looks like a no-brainer selection for GM Brett Veach.
Love rushed for 1,372 yards on 6.9 yards per carry and eight touchdowns for the Fighting Irish, adding 280 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns.
