With the end of Yellowstone, so is Kevin Costner’s contact with his on-screen son — at least, according to Luke Grimes.

Grimes, who portrayed John Dutton (Costner)’s youngest son, Kayce, on the gritty western drama, told Men’s Health in an interview published Monday, December 17, that he hasn’t spoken to the legendary actor since Costner’s character was killed off earlier in season 5. (The series came to a close on Sunday, December 15.)

“No, I haven’t talked to him since. It’s not a case of any hard feelings or anything; it’s just, he’s Kevin Costner,” Grimes, 40, laughed, adding: “He’s a big deal.”

While Grimes acknowledged that he does “have [Costner’s] phone number,” he just doesn’t “feel like it’s my place to reach out.”

“He can reach out to me if he wants to,” the Fifty Shades of Grey star said.

As for John Dutton’s shocking death on the show, the development came as a blow to the whole cast, Grimes shared.

“None of us saw it coming the way it did, and obviously there was news about possible blowups behind the scenes or whatever,” he explained, hinting at the supposed rift between Costner and series creator Taylor Sheridan.

“But just like in life, man, these things happen, they happen fast, and they’re not predictable,” Grimes continued, drawing parallels between the real-life death of his own father and the death of his on-screen dad (and the alleged behind-the-scenes drama that caused it).

“I lost my father a few years ago. It happened fast, and it was not the way that you would think that that would happen. In life, these things happen and then people have to start making decisions,” Grimes shared. “And in our little Yellowstone world, that helped ramp the show up into a boil.”

As for Costner’s take on how his character was written off, he admitted on The Michael Smerconish Program in November — one day after the episode aired — that he hadn’t watched it.

“I heard it’s a suicide,” he said at the time (though in actuality, it’s ultimately discovered on the show that his son Jamie’s girlfriend hired a hitman to kill him).

“So that doesn’t make me want to rush to go see it,” Costner added.

The Field of Dreams star confirmed his exit from the show in June.
