Though he’s been the head coach at LSU for several weeks now, Lane Kiffin just can’t distance himself from Ole Miss completely.

Given the public parting of ways the two sides went through not that long ago, coupled with Ole Miss’ success in the College Football Playoff without Kiffin, it’s of little surprise that each one can’t be mentioned without the other.

While Kiffin is watching the CFP from home like everyone else, the Rebels are proving they didn’t need Kiffin to get them to the national championship game because they’re one win away from getting there without him.

In what may have been the game of the CFP tournament so far, No. 6 Ole Miss knocked off No. 3 Georgia 39-34 on Thursday in the Sugar Bowl to advance to the CFP semifinals against the Miami Hurricanes, who took out defending national champion Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl Classic on Wednesday.

Though he’s no longer associated with Ole Miss, Kiffin is still benefitting from the team’s success. Before he left to take his new job at LSU, Kiffin negotiated to still get paid any bonus money he would have gotten from the Rebels advancing in the CFP, meaning his wallet got a little thicker after Thursday’s victory — though Ole Miss isn’t on the hook to pay him another dime.

“LSU is paying Kiffin’s performance bonus terms from Ole Miss,” Front Office Sports reported. “Kiffin is set to make $500k from the Rebels’ win against Georgia, which could turn into $1 million if the Rebels win it all.”

Kiffin earned a $150,000 bonus when Ole Miss made the College Football Playoff, which jumped to $250,000 when the team beat Tulane in Round 1. Thursday’s win bumped him up to $500,000, which will surge to $750,000 if the Rebels make it to the national title game, and $1 million if they win.

Fortunately for Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding, Kiffin’s successor, he gets paid out on the same bonus structure.
