As of March 27, 2026, 57 voting members of the U.S. House—21 Democrats and 36 Republicans—announced they would not seek reelection, most either retiring or running for higher office, according to Ballotpedia’s tracking.

The number of House members not seeking reelection is higher than previous cycles. Ballotpedia recorded 42 in 2024, 45 in 2022, 34 in 2020, and 46 in 2018.

Of the 57 House incumbents not running again, 29 are retiring; 16 are running for the U.S. Senate; 11 are running for governor; and one is running for state attorney general.

Below, using data from Ballotpedia, Newsweek has compiled a list of U.S. lawmakers who will not seek reelection in the 2026 elections.
