President Donald Trump’s approval rating has ticked down in recent weeks, but he still remains above water in most of the states he won last November, according to recent polls.

Newsweek has reached out to the White House for comment via email.

Why It Matters

Trump’s approval rating has significant implications for how Republicans may perform in off-year elections in 2025, such as the New Jersey or Virginia gubernatorial races, or the 2026 midterms.

Historically, the party of the president in power has suffered midterm losses, and a low approval rating for Trump would make a victory an easier feat for Democrats. That was the case in 2018, during the president’s first term, when Democrats picked up 41 seats in the House of Representatives. If that replicates next year, Democrats will have a key check on the White House administration, something they currently lack.

What to Know

Trump’s approval in states he won remains high, and is lower in states he easily lost to former Vice President Kamala Harris. But in key battlegrounds, he remains either tied or slightly underwater two months into his administration.

This map, based off Civiqs’ online daily approval tracking polls, shows how his approval is faring in each state as of March 27, 2025.

His support among the conservative base has held strong, but several recent polls suggest Americans are becoming increasingly concerned about Trump’s economy, a key issue that propelled him back into the Oval Office last year.

Grant Davis Reeher, a professor of political science at Syracuse University, told Newsweek he sees “consistency and flatness overall” in the polls, but that a slight downward trend makes “perfect sense” amid the firing of federal workers and tariff concerns.

“Each time this is done, new sets of citizens are exposed to things that might cause them to see or experience the administration in a less favorable light, whether that’s teachers, veterans getting support from the VA, a retiree on a long hold in a phone call with Social Security, someone with a 401(k) watching the markets, etc.,” he said.

Peoples’ minds probably aren’t going to change drastically because there’s “nothing really new” in terms of rhetoric from either major political party, he said, describing the trends in the Civiqs poll as “pretty familiar.”

Here is how his support stands in each state.

What People Are Saying

Grant Davis Reeher of Syracuse University when asked about Trump’s approval in battleground states, said: “He’s not in panic or disaster territory in battleground states, but certainly he’d want to try to boost both those numbers and his overall numbers prior to the mid-terms. He’s still got some time, and I imagine the hope is that congressional action on a tax cut will repair some of that.”

CNN Data analyst Harry Enten on March 25: “All we talk about is how unpopular Donald Trump is, but in reality, he’s basically more popular than he was at any point in term number one, and more popular than he was when he won [the] election back in November 2024.”

What Happens Next

Trump’s approval will continue to be a major question over the coming months as an indicator of the popularity of both his policies and the Republican Party headed into key elections.
