Pirola said he was typically joined by work colleagues, although they had skipped the ritual on Wednesday for a sleep in.

Elsewhere in Victoria, temperatures in Horsham, Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong and on the Mornington Peninsula dropped to between minus 1 degree and minus 3 degrees.

Reid said it wasn’t just the typically frosty places that were blanketed in white on Wednesday morning.

Melbourne could be in for a week-long run of mornings at or below 5 degrees. If this happened, it would be for the first time since June 2013 and make the week the coldest in 11 years.

Reid said the frosty starts were also expected to continue in Melbourne throughout the week.

“We’ve got another very frosty one in store for tomorrow, another 1 degree morning on the cards,” she said.

“We’ve got a bit of cloud coming through later in the week and that’ll stop things from being completely frosty, although it looks like it’ll be a bit frosty again on Saturday and Sunday morning.”

Victoria’s alpine region hopes the blanketing it experienced in the past week continues, after more than 30 centimetres of snow fell on Hotham over the past seven days.

Mount Buller will mark 100 years of skiing on the mountain this weekend, with snow lovers invited to celebrate the milestone on Saturday.
