The New York Mets made a trade for Freddy Peralta on Wednesday and acquired Vidal Bruján from the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, according to his transaction log.
Bruján has had a busy offseason. He agreed to a one-year split contract with the Braves on Nov. 20, and less than two months after that, he was designated for assignment. The Twins claimed him off waivers on Jan. 14. They designated him for assignment on Jan. 21.
The Mets acquired him for cash from the Twins. He has experience playing multiple positions and could be an option for the Mets as they look for potential players to fill a need in the outfield. The Mets have Carson Benge, Tyrone Taylor and Brett Baty as potential options in left field.
Bruján played five games in left field last season. He also spent time at third base, second base, shortstop, center field and right field. In his career, he has logged innings at every position except catcher. He has played in 261 games in the big leagues between the Tampa Bay Rays, Miami Marlins, Chicago Cubs, Baltimore Orioles and Braves.
The Braves claimed him off waivers in August. In 23 games, he slashed .268/.362/.317. He was once the Rays’ No. 4 prospect and is only 27 years old. The Mets’ infield already has plenty of capable players, so Bruján’s best chance of making the team is in the outfield.
