The New York Mets signed Juan Soto to a massive $765 million contract this winter. They don’t have to make another move, and they would be in a decent position for the next 15 years. But that’s not how owner Steve Cohen operates.
The Toronto Blue Jays looked in prime position to sign either Soto or Corbin Burnes. But they missed out on both. Now the idea of trading superstar infielder Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has to be crossing their minds. Guerrero is a free agent at the end of the season and it doesn’t seem like the Blue Jays will be able to extend him before he hits free agency.
FanSided’s Christopher Kline recently made a list of the top five teams in the Guerrero sweepstakes if the Blue Jays opt to deal him. To the surprise of no one, the Mets were on that list.
“We know Steve Cohen has deep pockets and a determination to contend,” Kline wrote. “Vladimir Guerrero Jr. isn’t the cleanest fit on paper, but putting his bat behind Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto for the next decade would cement the New York Mets as perennial favorites in the NL East. So, consider the Mets a serious threat, even if it feels wonky at first glance. Guerrero is good enough to justify trading for him and figuring it out on the fly.”
The Mets would make a lot of sense if the Blue Jays decided to trade him. New York’s farm system isn’t loaded like the Seattle Mariners or the Boston Red Sox’s systems are, but that doesn’t mean the Mets couldn’t deal multiple top prospects to acquire the superstar.
Now, I still think it’s a long shot the Blue Jays will trade him anyway. But if they do, the Mets are a serious contender to acquire him and pair him alongside Soto. They would also be in good position to win a bidding war for him next winter when Guerrero hits free agency.
