2025 was a big year for TV shows recasting major characters — starting with Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue replacing Donnie Wahlberg‘s son.
Danny’s (Wahlberg) journey in New York was featured on CBS’ Blue Bloods, which ran from 2010 to 2024. The spinoff, which premiered in October, kicked off with Danny visiting Boston after Sean (Mika Amonsen) ended up in a coma. This version of Sean looked a little different after the role was previously played by Andrew Terraciano.
“There’s been some negativity, for sure,” Amonsen exclusively told Us Weekly of taking over the role. “But when I look under those posts that have the negativity, there’s a lot of fans rallying for Sean and people saying that they really enjoyed this character that I’ve created — or my version of character.”
Amonsen noted that he wanted to make Blue Bloods fans happy with his performance, saying, “They’re really enjoying the show and they love where it’s going in terms of Sean and that makes me happy.”
Terraciano, meanwhile, broke his silence to Us about the shakeup.
“I had somebody call me — actually the day that I was graduating — and they had spoken to my mom and she called me [crying]. They were like, ‘They might be looking for a different Sean,’” Terraciano shared with Us in December about the onscreen change. “Shortly after we got the news, Donnie called me. It was a really beautiful moment of getting to hear from an old friend but also somebody that you respect so much and have learned so much from.”

‘Vanderpump Rules’
After 11 seasons, Vanderpump Rules made a change by overhauling the entire cast.
‘RJ Decker’
Scott Speedman‘s new ABC show cast Station 19‘s Jaina Lee Ortiz as a series regular. She will play Emi Ochoa, a “shrewd-if-unpredictable daughter of a very powerful, very corrupt state senator” with ties to RJ’s (Speedman) past.
The character was originally named Shay Bennett and played by Weruche Opia in the pilot. After the show was picked up, it was announced that the role would be recast. In addition to Speedman and Ortiz, RJ Decker stars Kevin Rankin, Adelaide Clemens and Bevin Bru.
FBI’s ‘CIA’
In April 2025, CBS gave CIA a straight-to-series order starring Tom Ellis and Nick Gehlfuss. Originally planned for a fall 2025 premiere, CIA was pushed to midseason after Warren Leight replaced FBI: Most Wanted‘s David Hudgins as showrunner.
The changes kept coming when Michael Michele, one of the series’ leads, left in November 2025. Days later, Eriq La Salle left the series as executive producer. He was attached to CIA since its conception and directed the pilot before his exit.
‘Malcolm in the Middle’
After Disney+ picked up the revival series, Variety confirmed in March 2025 that Erik Per Sullivan would be recast. His character Dewey will be played by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, who is taking over the role for the four-episode special.
‘Stranger Things’
Anniston Price and Tinsley Price appeared in the first four seasons as younger Holly before season 5 reintroduced the character — and aged her up for the story with Nell Fisher in the lead role.
‘Boston Blue’
Blue Bloods fans were reintroduced to Sean, who was previously played by Terraciano, on Boston Blue. Before the spinoff premiered, news broke that Sean would be played by Amonsen.
