The New York Jets were hoping to see the franchise begin turning around under first-year head coach Aaron Glenn. So far, that has not been the case.
Through the first six weeks of the 2025 NFL season, the Jets have compiled an 0-6 record. Justin Fields has shown flashes of potential as the team’s starting quarterback, but the fans aren’t happy with him as the starter currently.
Right now, the future in New York looks murky. No one knows what the next steps will be to turning the Jets back into a playoff contender. However, there are a lot of calls beginning to come out for a quarterback change.
Eagles’ AJ Brown Trade Rumors Receive Major Update
Fields has played in five of the team’s first six ganes. He has completed 65 percent of his pass attempts for 799 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions, while also running for 235 yards and three scores. Overall, his numbers don’t look bad, but the team simply hasn’t been winning.
Due to the lack of winning, the push for a quarterback change has been very loud. Fields is likely the best option available for New York at this point in time, but some ideas have started popping up for the Jets to replace him.
One potential trade idea has been suggested that would be an extremely bizarre move for New York to make.
CBS Sports analyst Tyler Sullivan has named the Jets as a top potential landing spot for New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson.
“At least he’d save on moving fees, right? The New York Jets are in a bad way at the moment, currently 0-6 on the young season. They are coming off a Week 6 matchup against the Denver Broncos in London where Justin Fields was non-existent as a passer,” Sullivan wrote. “In all, New York had a -10 net passing yard total, which has brought Fields’ job security into question. If the coaching staff/front office feel as if they’ve gotten all they get out of Fields and do not want to turn things over to Tyrod Taylor, Wilson could be an option in an attempt to bring the passing attack to a somewhat respectable level.”
While the argument could be made that Wilson might offer New York an upgrade over Fields, there are major problems with the idea.
Wilson is now 36 years old. In the five total games he has played for the Giants this season, Wilson has thrown for 786 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions, while completing 58.9 percent of his passes.
Browns Have Clear Potential Trade Partner for Shedeur Sanders
Bringing in a veteran quarterback who doesn’t offer a long-term outlook is far from what the Jets should be considering. Even from a pure numbers perspective, Wilson has not been better than Fields.
Making a change just to make a change should not be a consideration for New York. Fields has had some rough moments this season, but he has also had moments where he looks like a franchise quarterback. He likely isn’t the long-term cornerstone for the Jets, but moving on from him to acquire Wilson would make zero sense.
