Mississippi Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin faces serious decisions about his coaching future, with the potential to move to LSU, Florida, or other teams with openings. He’s been guiding his current school, Ole Miss, towards the College Football Playoffs, and Alabama legend Nick Saban had some serious advice for him.
With College GameDay occurring on Saturday at the University of Utah, the episode included plenty of entertaining and hilarious moments, including Pat McAfee going shirtless and a fan with a sign claiming to be Saban’s “pool boy.”
It wouldn’t be an episode without some discussion of the ongoing coaching rumors swirling around Kiffin, James Franklin, Brian Kelly, and other coaches who could fill head-coaching vacancies at programs in need.
Kirk Herbstreit and Saban got serious when discussing the potential for Kiffin to leave Ole Miss and fill a head-coaching vacancy with the Tigers, Gators, or another team.
“So you got a team like Indiana … who really never, traditionally, anybody looked at as a great job. And like Ole Miss, you know, Lane’s been really successful at Ole Miss, but how could you make the argument that LSU or Florida or any of those schools are better than Ole Miss based on the support that he has and how they’ve been able to manage things internally with all these external factors?” Saban asked.

“So I think everybody needs to be very careful about how they evaluate their opportunity,” Saban said per On3, regarding Kiffin and other coaches considering a new school.
When it comes to coaching rumors, Kiffin is undoubtedly one of the top names on most programs’ lists for potential head coach jobs. His team is currently at No. 7 in college football’s AP Top 25 rankings with just one loss so far.
Kiffin’s been with Ole Miss since 2020, achieving winning records in all but one of his seasons so far. The only non-winning season came in 2020 when he was 5-5 overall and 4-5 in the SEC.
Saban became a legend as coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide from 2007 through 2023, retiring with seven National Championship wins. His only losing season came in 2007, when he began coaching the SEC squad, as they were 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the conference under Saban.
His advice makes a lot of sense, but it might also depend on how Kiffin’s Ole Miss Rebels finish their latest season.
His team is off to a hot start at 7-1 overall, with a game against South Carolina on the slate for Saturday that Kiffin is surely more focused on than where he’ll coach next season.
