Green Day broke out in the mid-’90s with their signature blend of punk music paired with pop songwriting and sensibilities. The band worked their way to legendary status with a number of smash hits, and which are still remembered fondly to this day.
The new No. 1 movie in America, Deadpool & Wolverine, is helping remind some Americans how much they love some old Green Day tracks. One of the group’s earliest major wins on the charts in America is surging in popularity once more, thanks to a sync in the action-packed flick.
“Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” has become a streaming win once again, following the release of Deadpool & Wolverine. Billboard reports that in the first four days that the movie was in theaters, Green Day’s single racked up 1.33 million streams in the U.S. alone. That’s a sizable sum for the decades-old cut—and it’s up considerably from the week prior.
When that number is compared to the four day-long period that took place exactly a week before Deadpool & Wolverine was unleashed, it’s clear how much of an impact the movie is having. Green Day’s tune earned just 708,000 plays from July 19-22. That means the cut experienced an 88% increase in streams in just a matter of days.
Green Day isn’t the only musical act benefiting from the movie’s incredible popularity. Madonna’s “Like a Prayer,” which is also featured in the film, saw its stream count grow even larger. That single rose 229% in plays on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music from July 19-22 to July 26-29.
“Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” was released in 1997 as the second single from Green Day’s album Nimrod. By that time, they were already pop-punk gods, and the track further cemented their popularity. It climbed to No. 11 on the Hot 100, and it has since been certified five-times platinum.
