Five police officers and another person have been taken to hospital in a stable condition.
Carbon monoxide has been detected at the site, with fire technicians now combing through the restaurant to understand the nature and origin of the leak.
“They’re using a number of high-end detectors, four of them, to go through this building to determine what the product is, how many there are, because that will also help the people being transported get treated,” Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Dewberry told Nine News.
“We need to find out what it is and where it’s coming from, so we can render the site safe.”
Intensive and critical care paramedics were called just after 9am, with doctors and a CareFlight helicopter also dispatched to treat eight patients at the scene. Paramedics are standing by to monitor the fire technicians conducting gas detections at the site.
Carbon monoxide is a poisonous clear gas that can’t be tasted or smelled, and can cause serious illness or death if inhaled at high levels.
