Fileman said there was already a heavy police presence in the city due to protest activity, which allowed for the swift response to the incident.
A witness who was on the scene soon after the stabbing said the area was quickly swarming with police, with “at least 20” officers pinning the suspect to the ground.
A police cap, a red bike, a pair of white running shoes, a bag and a wallet were left strewn across the footpath and on the park wall where the stabbing took place, near the intersection of Elizabeth Street and Bathurst Street.
Traffic down Elizabeth Street and through the Park and Castlereagh Street intersection has been stopped as police speak to witnesses and nearby businesses.
No charges have been laid.
