Last week, the Baltimore Ravens decided to bring in former Super Bowl champion C.J. Gardner-Johnson to help bolster their struggling secondary ahead of their Week 6 game against the Los Angeles Rams. However, the signing has seemingly not gone to plan, which led to a rather shocking decision made by the Ravens on Tuesday.
After starting the season with the Houston Texans, Gardner-Johnson was let go in a decision that Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans says was made solely by him, saying simply that it was “best for the team” to part ways with him.
This led to the Ravens, who have allowed the fourth-most passing yards in football through the first six weeks of the season, to bring in Gardner-Johnson to potentially play a role in helping the team’s struggling pass defense.
Instead, Gardner-Johnson was not activated from the team’s practice squad for the matchup, which has seemingly led to both sides deciding to part ways with one another just one week into Gardner-Johnson’s time in Baltimore.

According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the Ravens are releasing Gardner-Johnson in a move that is “an amicable mutual decision”, according to Gardner-Johnson’s agent Kevin Conner.
In a statement to Schefter, Conner explained how the Ravens’ decision to trade for safety Alohi Gillman made for a difficult path for playing time for Gardner-Johnson, which is why he wanted out of Baltimore.
“After the Ravens traded for a safety, we were looking for a clearer path to play,” said Conner.

Having been released by two different teams in the span of only a few weeks, it sure seems like Gardner-Johnson’s path to playing time on an NFL roster in 2025 may be hard to find moving forward.
With that being said, the former Philadelphia Eagles standout certainly has a track record of a player who should be playing on an NFL roster, recording multiple six-interception seasons over the course of his seven-year NFL career. So maybe he will play the waiting game and see whether injuries around the league create an opportunity to see the field at some point this season.
