The Boston Red Sox acquired third baseman Caleb Durbin from Milwaukee in a six-player trade that sent left-hander Kyle Harrison back to the Brewers, ending Boston’s winter-long search for a right-handed-hitting infielder on the eve of spring training opening. The Red Sox confirmed the move in an X post on Monday.
Boston also acquired infielder Andruw Monasterio, utilityman Anthony Seigler and a Competitive Balance Round B draft pick while sending infielder David Hamilton and left-hander Shane Drohan to Milwaukee.
Caleb Durbin may not be the power right-handed bat Red Sox fans expected to fill the infield void. Boston’s front office pursued a right-handed slugger all winter, but Durbin offers something different: good defense at third base, youth, and elite speed. The 25-year-old finished third in National League Rookie of the Year voting last season, with sharp plate discipline and 18 stolen bases. Most crucially for Craig Breslow’s front office, Durbin remains under team control through 2031 — a key priority after years chasing long-term assets.
The Red Sox lose Kyle Harrison, a highly regarded left-handed pitching prospect frequently ranked among baseball’s best due to his elite high-spin fastball (92-95 mph). Harrison landed in Boston as part of the package received from San Francisco in return for the Rafael Devers trade. Still, letting him go doesn’t damage the farm system. Boston boasts a crowded pitching pipeline with Connelly Early, Payton Tolle and recently drafted right-hander Kyson Witherspoon, all showing big league potential. Early and Tolle could return to MLB this year, with Witherspoon eyed for a possible last part of the season debut.
Milwaukee culled further from its infield surplus by dealing Monasterio, 28, a high-energy clubhouse presence who hit .270/.319/.437 last season while playing all four infield spots plus left field over three utility seasons. Seigler, 26, a former Yankees first-round catcher pick, logged most time at third base last year.
Milwaukee gains Hamilton, 28, a speedster with 55 steals in 65 tries over two years and an above-average glove at second — though the Brewers feature Platinum Glove winner Brice Turang there. Drohan, 27, posted a 2.27 ERA with 67 strikeouts in 47.2 Triple-A innings last year.
The trade bolsters Boston’s infield depth while giving Milwaukee pitching upside heading into 2026.
