Though the Boston Red Sox will have to alter their offseason plans with Alex Bregman no longer available, there are still free agents available who could make a big impact for the team.
After addressing their starting rotation early this offseason by trading for Sonny Gray, the Red Sox have primarily focused on improving their infield. Boston traded for Willson Contreras, but lost Alex Bregman who reportedly agreed to a five-year, $175 million contract with the Chicago Cubs, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
With Bregman off the board, the Red Sox could look to prioritize improving their pitching staff. MassLive’s Sean McAdam and Chris Cotillo reported that Boston checked in on Toronto Blue Jays free agent pitcher Seranthony Domínguez.
“The Red Sox also remain in the market for bullpen arms,” McAdam and Cotillo wrote Monday. “As MassLive has reported, veteran lefties Justin Wilson, Cionel Perez, Tim Mayza and Danny Coulombe are all targets. The club has also checked in on Seranthony Domínguez and, continuing an annual offseason tradition, Tommy Kahnle. For the most part, the relief free agent market has been picked over.”
After spending the first five seasons of his career with the Philadelphia Phillies, Domínguez has bounced around from team to team the past two seasons, most recently playing for the Blue Jays. The 30-year-old hurler excelled this season, setting a career-high by striking out 79 batters.
The Red Sox lost multiple key relievers this offseason, so bringing in Domínguez would be a great move to further bolster their pitching staff.
