Team USA’s performance during the first two days of the Ryder Cup has been far from satisfying for fans. Going into Sunday trailing by seven points, it’s no surprise that many Americans are already thinking about the next edition.
Defeat usually spells the end for the captain, especially if the loss is by a wide margin. The possibility that Keegan Bradley will not return in 2027 has opened the door to speculation, and the debate over a new captain has already begun.
Phil Mickelson’s name naturally comes to mind when talking about the American side of the Ryder Cup. The six-time major winner has never served as captain, so many see him as a viable option for Adare Manor in two years.
However, Lefty nipped the rumor in the bud by posting on X that there is no chance of this happening.
“My Ryder Cup days are over. I’m just a spectator now but I’ll always pull hard for Team USA,” he wrote on Saturday.
On Sunday, Mickelson addressed the subject again when he commented on a Golf.com post, reiterating that there are no rumors of any kind in this regard.
“No rumors. My Ryder Cup involvement is over. I’m happy being a spectator and rooting for Team USA,” he posted.
Mickelson has maintained this stance consistently in recent times. During an interview with “The Pat McAfee Show” last January, he stated that he was not the right person to lead Team USA due to the controversy surrounding him regarding his ties to LIV Golf.
“I don’t feel I’m the right guy to be involved with the team,” he said back then, according to National Club Golfer. “I’m a very divisive character right now, if you will, and I understand that. The players on the PGA Tour, there’s a lot of hostilities towards me, and I don’t feel I’d be the best leader for them.”
Phil Mickelson represented Team USA in a record-setting 12 Ryder Cup editions. Across 47 matches, he amassed 21.5 points and contributed to three victorious campaigns. His strongest format was four-ball, where he earned 10 points in 17 appearances.
