Spotify has already dabbled in AI playlists, but on Thursday, the company unveiled a new tool that generates a playlist based on your description of an idea, feeling or moment. The feature, called Prompted Playlist, also takes into account your listening history and current cultural trends.

Prompted Playlist is rolling out in beta to Premium users in the US and Canada, following testing in New Zealand. The tool uses a prompt, real-time information about the music world and your full Spotify listening history to produce playlists.Â
In a news release, Spotify said listeners in New Zealand are creating playlists with “songs tied to specific moments, like late nights during the winter, while filtering out tracks they’ve overplayed recently.” Others, according to Spotify, are “mixing in artists connected to current pop culture moments and viral trends.”
Spotify recently announced a round of price increases, including in the US, that affect new customers immediately and existing customers in February. If you’re sticking with the music streaming service, here’s how you can try out the new Prompted Playlist beta feature.
- Find Create on Spotify.
- Select Prompted Playlist.
- Write a prompt where you describe a vibe, scenario or cultural moment you want to hear.Â
- Spotify generates a playlist.
- You can edit your prompt or set it to refresh daily or weekly. If you share your Prompted Playlist, others will get their own personalized version.
