A rescue dog who spent years wary of other hounds has melted hearts online after discovering an unlikely friendship with a cat.
The moment was shared on Threads by Melissa Meares, who documents life fixing up an A‑frame cabin in the Pacific Northwest woods. The post has since garnered more than 75,600 views, with animal lovers flooding the comments to share their own stories of unlikely friendships.
“EVERYONE SHUT UP!!! My 5-year-old rescue puppy (who is scared of dogs) just discovered that cats exist and wants to be their friends I can’t (dog & cat tax below),” Meares wrote.
In social media slang, “dog and cat tax” refers to the expectation that if someone talks about their pet online, they should also “pay the tax” by sharing photos or videos as proof.
The image shows the blonde dog cautiously walking up to a black cat in a sunny yard, the pair appearing calm and curious as they size each other up.
Despite the age‑old stereotype of cats and dogs being natural enemies, experts say cross‑species friendships are more common than many people think. According to Dogs Trust, many dogs and cats can live peacefully together—and often form close bonds—particularly when introductions are gradual and stress‑free. Some even groom one another or choose to sleep side by side.
The moment struck a chord with social media users, many of whom shared personal stories and photos of their own unexpected animal friendships.
“Widget loved our one‑eyed cat that gave her face baths (and crazy hair). She would go to him and nudge for licks. When that cat died, she tried and tried to get the other cats to give her baths, but sadly, none of them will,” shared one user.
Another animal lover offered a lighthearted warning about what might come next: “Be prepared for your camera roll to just be filled with pictures of them together.”
Others chimed in with visual proof of their own “disproportionately‑sized besties.”
“Twix and Henry say ‘welcome to the disproportionately‑sized besties club!’” shared Tabi, alongside a photo of a German shepherd‑looking pup snuggled up to an orange cat.
“My two love each other,” wrote Rae, posting an image of a chihuahua cuddled next to a black cat noticeably larger than the dog.
Some commenters leaned into humor rather than sentimentality.
“Cats are excellent dog sitters,” shared one user.
Others summed up the collective mood more simply: “This is the kind of news I want to see!”
