A toddler who drowned in a dam on a rural property near Geelong has been remembered by family as an adventurous little boy who loved animals.

Luka had been helping his mother, Karin Huddle, put rugs on their horses in Lara, about 60 kilometres south-west of Melbourne, on Tuesday afternoon when he followed his puppy to a neighbouring property.

Luka’s grandmother and Karin’s mother, Sharon Huddle, alerted authorities when it began getting dark and they had not found the two-year-old.

Police found the toddler unresponsive in a nearby dam following a helicopter search of the surrounding area. Offices were unable to revive him and he died early on Tuesday evening.

“This boy loved to wander. That was his favourite thing. He was an absolute adventurous little boy and he wandered off with his puppy, Poppy,” Karin told Nine News.

Karin said she became concerned that her son may have entered the dam when Poppy was found with wet fur, without Luka.

“He used to do swimming [lessons] every single Sunday. He wasn’t afraid of the water, but he was normally so water safe,” she said. “I believe he’s fallen in more than just walked in.”

Karin said she had recently moved from Hoppers Crossing to the rural property, about 45 minutes from Melbourne, with Luka.
